... was seven miles return trip, in gravelly sand, on an incline, in 100 degrees heat, with the youngsters resting next to me on the trail back disturbing a rattler ...

I looked up your GPS data. I think I stopped on that road too. About 15 more minutes and down on 93 there is a small parking overlooking Colorado river. I saw a burned down truck there. It was surreal to be in the desert like this. All the best.
